Kaikoura’s well known Seafest to pave the new way.
Kaikoura Seafest organising committee are well on the way to seeing the popular event to be zero waste from here on in with support from Innovative Waste Kaikoura and Kaikoura District Council.
Seafest is New Zealand’s iconic seafood and wine festival. The seafest event is held annually at the beginning of October and signals the start of the summer tourist season. Seafest is known as a seafood festival with great entertainment, food & beverages. Seafest has taken a positive step to support Kaikoura’s Zero Waste commitment and the whole community.
This is the first year of the Zero Waste journey for Kaikoura’s popular Seafest event. For 2016, Seafest have developed a Zero Waste policy which stall holders had to agree to. “We are focussing on the site for 2016” says Seafest co-ordinator Sheena Hamilton. “This means ensuring we have bins and signs in place for waste disposal for vendors and guests at the festival.” The event intends to be fully Zero Waste in 2017. Innovative Waste Kaikoura is also encouraging other local commercial waste collection providers to come on board also.
Zero Waste means no waste going to landfill and everything being recycled. Recently an audit was carried out of the Kaikoura waste stream and commercial waste to landfill showed up at 43% so aiming for a Zero Waste event is a huge step in the right direction.
“People love to come to Kaikoura, and understanding that the community is passionate about protecting the environment is part of the Kaikoura experience”, says Kaikoura Promotions Manager Glenn Ormsby. The aim is to have the tools available for all events in Kaikoura, from here on in.
If you are attending Seafest this year, take note of the new waste system that will be in place, remember to recycle, think about doing your bit for the environment and enjoy your day.
If you are a local event coordinator, then Innovative Waste Kaikoura would love to hear from you and help your event to join our Zero Waste journey.
